There is always music amongst the trees in the garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. - Minnie Aumonier

Rangers have been a part of society for nearly a thousand years. Dating back to the early 1200’s, rangers were responsible for patrolling the forests and seeing that the Forest Laws were enforced. These laws included borders, protection of wild game, as well as monitoring laws along state roads. These individuals were vital to the well being of travelers through the forest. Most of the time they lived off the land, foraging and hunting small game.

Conservation first

Rangers have first and foremost always been used for conservation. Even today, Park Rangers are tasked with the same original goals. Maintaining the safety of the land, enforcing laws to protect wildlife, and even maintaining trails or roads throughout the parks.

What is a Ranger? Well, what we know today as protectors of nature is and always has been accurate, but there were other uses for these Rangers beyond mere nature conservationist. While not being of noble birth, they were still wealthy land owners known as Yeoman. Their main duty was to protect the monarch’s land from invaders, hunters, and poachers that weren't given permission to use the King/Queen’s forest.

They also served in battles on many occasions. Being spectacular archers and more than handy with a sword, were there a shortage of soldiers, they could easily fill in. However, on a more ominous note, they were sometimes feared more than actual knights, as nobles had to follow a code of chivalry or their families were dishonored.

The Yeoman were not of noble birth and therefore had no such restrictions. Even though this is not very well documented, many historians believe the Yeomen were sometimes responsible for turning the tides in certain battles. They were not afraid to use guerrilla tactics in a time when gentlemen were expected to fight with honor.

Rangers are akin to special forces or dark ops groups. They pushed the boundaries of honor though their use of stealth tactics and ambush missions relying heavily on forests and nature for cover; much like the stories of Robin Hood we hear about today. So with that little bit of history, to summarize: We are a group of nature lovers that study and train to survive in the wilderness, we look cool doing it, and know how to use a wide array of medieval weapons. Come join us, it's fun!
